Upcoming Supreme Court Decisions

Dear UCCS community,

The summer months are usually a time for us to catch our breath, and recharge for the upcoming semester. However, I have heard members of our campus community express that in recent days, it’s been hard to feel hopeful. We are grappling with grief from mass shootings, struggles over inflation, and many other difficult issues.

I anticipate that many of these issues will continue to be part of the public conversation. The U.S. Supreme Court is expected to issue nearly 30 decisions this month as it wraps up its current term. While we don’t have a crystal ball to see the future, the effects of these rulings will be significant: in as little as a week, we may hear decisions on abortion rights, gun control, immigration, climate change and religious freedom.

We will all be affected by these decisions, one way or another. Many of the rulings concern individual rights and freedoms, as well as the federal government’s authority. I can’t presume to know how upcoming societal changes might affect you personally. But I can commit to ensuring that UCCS will continue to stay true to its core mission and values.

As an institution of higher education, we support world-class study, research and debate — and we are committed to sharing this knowledge. Our students, faculty and staff are already engaged in these critical conversations, from offering expert perspectives on abortion rights and insurrection to marching in support of women and LGBTQIA+ community members. What’s more, we are leading national conversations on resilience in the face of traumatic events and the economic strength of our region, despite the challenges of inflation.

We are navigating difficult conversations, but we are equipped to not only make sense of them, but to make our voices heard. As a university and a community, we will continue to stand for scientific truth. We will continue to uphold democratic processes. We will continue to create crucial, informed conversations for society. And we will continue to educate ourselves, our students and the future engaged citizens of the world.

Respectfully,
