"By showing compassion, empathy and respect to all those around you, you help us to respond to the deepest challenges of our time in ways that lift up our entire community."— Chancellor Venkat Reddy

Dear members of the UCCS community,

Like many of you, I have closely watched the trial of Derek Chauvin, the former Minneapolis police officer charged in George Floyd’s death. This has been a challenging time, and I know many members of our community have been deeply affected not only by the acts of violence that predicated the trial, but also by the experience of the trial itself.

Now that we have heard the trial’s outcome, I ask members of the UCCS community to respond thoughtfully, with compassion for yourselves and for each member of our community.

Universities are important institutions during times such as these given our diversity of perspectives. Continuing acts of violence and prejudice around the nation and world show us that our work to strengthen a culture of equity, diversity, inclusion and safety at UCCS is more important than ever. Thank you for contributing to this work.

I recognize that some may experience strong emotions related to these current events, and I encourage prioritizing mental health during this time. As always, students may visit the Wellness Center for resources and support. Faculty and staff can utilize the Colorado State Employee Assistance Program and the UCCS HealthCircle Primary Care Clinic at the Lane Center.

In addition, the Wellness Center has organized 5-week support groups for students on Mondays between 2-3:30 p.m. and on Thursdays between 9-10:30 a.m. If you would like to meet with others in a safe environment and process how the outcome of the trial has affected you, please call 719-255-4444 and sign up for the student support group. You can request an in-person or remote meeting and the Wellness Center staff will do their best to accommodate your preference.

By showing compassion, empathy and respect to all those around you, you help us to respond to the deepest challenges of our time in ways that lift up our entire community. Thank you.

Respectfully,
