What is a healthy campus?

A healthy campus enables an environment where students, faculty, and staff can thrive and where the university can adapt, grow, and fulfill its mission well into the future. A healthy campus anticipates challenges and opportunities, plans intentionally for desired outcomes, and reinvests in student, faculty, and staff success. A healthy campus responsibly stewards its resources to remain agile, stable, and competitive, with revenues aligned to expenditures and the capacity to invest in people, programs, and infrastructure.

The primary elements of a financially healthy campus are:

  • Liquidity: We have the ability to meet short-term obligations without crisis decisions.
  • Sustainability: We ensure recurring revenues are greater than recurring expenses.
  • Strategic Capacity: We have the ongoing flexibility to invest in priorities and innovation aligned with our priorities and mission.
  • Resilience: We will consistently maintain adequate reserves to safeguard against fluctuations in state funding, enrollment or auxiliary revenues.

What is our philosophy as we approach this work?

Aligning Resources for Sustainable Growth

A healthy campus is one where our ambitions are matched by our resources, and where we steward those resources with care, transparency, and intention, always in service of our people, our students, and our mission.

Financial health is not an end in itself. It is the enabler that allows us to invest in our faculty and staff, deliver high-quality student experiences, and pursue strategic growth aligned with our mission focused through our differentiator. A healthy campus requires that recurring expenses are supported by recurring revenue, and that we make deliberate, data-informed choices about where to invest, where to sustain, and where to step back in order to move forward.

The University Leadership Team has six key priorities for improving how we approach budget planning and decision-making:

  • Clear direction and priorities to anchor decisions and provide context, even when choices are difficult.
  • Predictable timelines to reduce uncertainty and bring closure to decisions.
  • Greater transparency through earlier and more consistent communication.
  • Meaningful engagement and shared governance that moves beyond forums to shared understanding, opportunities for feedback, and collaboration.
  • Alignment with people and mission to ensure decisions support our students, faculty, staff, and operations.
  • Clear communication of student impact, so outcomes are understood through the lens of student experience.
